On April 25, 2018, IBA released its 2018 Corporate Annual Report, which outlines the current status of global proton therapy and future development trends. IBA SA (Ion Beam Application Technology Co., Ltd.) was established in 1986 in Belgium. In 2004, subsidiary Ebiya (Particle Accelerator Technology Co., Ltd.) was established in Beijing, China. From its inception, IBA has consistently developed innovative medical devices, radiopharmaceuticals and software solutions for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
 


In 2017 more than 600 proton therapies were published worldwide.
As the number of proton therapy patients worldwide increases, academics are increasingly aware of the benefits of proton therapy technology. In 2017, more than 629 proton therapy literature has been published worldwide.
 
Clinical trials have encouraged the use of proton therapy in more cancer types. As of the end of 2017, 160 clinical trials are underway worldwide. Among the statistical types of cancer, three clinical trials of brain / central nervous system / skull base tumor, pediatric tumor and prostate cancer accounted for 24%, 23% and 21%, respectively. Lung cancer (16%), breast cancer (14%) and head and neck cancer (11%). Other types of cancer showed esophageal cancer (8%), pancreatic cancer (6%), sarcoma (6%), pseudotumor (4%) and liver cancer (3%).

Global Proton Therapy Center Continues to Grow
According to the World Population Projection, at least 2,500 proton therapy rooms are needed to meet the 17.7% treatment needs of patients and only 265 proton therapy rooms are currently sold. The number of global proton therapy centers has grown exponentially since 2000. According to PTCOG data, there were 66 academic or commercial proton therapy centers around the world operating around the end of 2017. In 2020, there are 42 proton therapy centers in North America and Europe, and 39 proton therapy centers in Asia.
